Challenging Decisions

If you are unhappy with a decision we have made about Housing Benefit, Council Tax Benefit or Council Tax Support there are several things you can do. If you do not understand our decision and would like it explained in more detail you can ask for a statement of reasons. You must write to us within one month of the decision you want to know more about and tell us what you would like explained.

Housing / Council Tax Benefit

If you disagree with a decision we have made you can ask us to reconsider it. You must write to us within one month of us making the decision and explain why you would like it looked at again. If we agree our decision should be changed we will write to you to tell you we have changed it. If we decide we cannot change our decision we will write to you and explain why.

If you still disagree with our decision you have a further month to write and appeal. We will send your appeal to Her Majesties Courts and Tribunals Service along with an explanation about our decision. An independent tribunal will decide if our decision is correct or not.

Local Council Tax Support

From 1st April 2013 Council Tax Benefit was replaced by Local Council Tax Support. If you disagree with a decision we have made about your entitlement you can write to us at any time and ask us to look at it again. We will write to you with our reply within two months.

If you are still unhappy with our decision you have a further two months to appeal direct to The Valuation Tribunal. This is an independent organisation who will decide if our decision should be changed or not.
