It’s time to nominate your Citizen of the Year

Do you know somebody who works tirelessly to make a difference to our local community? The annual Citizen of the Year Awards are now open for nominations, and we would like to hear who you believe is making a difference in our community. 

Rochford District Council Citizen of the Year Awards are the perfect opportunity to recognise and acknowledge local people for their valuable work and outstanding achievements. From providing essential services to the vulnerable, to tirelessly volunteering to help others, we want to hear about those extraordinary people that really make a difference to our community.

Nominations are open to individuals located within the Rochford district and will be scored by a cross party judging panel.

The categories are:

  • Young Citizen (under 18)

We believe in nurturing the next generation of leaders and community champions. The Young Citizen of the Year award is dedicated to recognising the exceptional contributions of young individuals under the age of 18 who have shown remarkable dedication to improving our community.

  • Charitable Support (over 18) 

The Charitable Support category is open to citizens of all ages who have made significant contributions to charitable causes in the Rochford District. Whether through fundraising, volunteer work, or other charitable endeavours, we aim to acknowledge those who have made a tangible difference in the lives of others.

  • Community Spirit (over 18)

The Community Spirit category celebrates citizens of all ages who have displayed unwavering dedication to enhancing the sense of community in Rochford District. Whether it's through organizing events, fostering inclusivity, or initiating projects that bring people together, this award recognizes those who embody the true spirit of community.

Rochford District Council is pleased to announce the winners of the 2024 Citizen of the Year awards

Archie Hammond is this year's Young Citizen of the Year award winner. Archie's outstanding dedication to Corinthians Women’s FC and the Wildcats, along with his selflessness and commitment, distinguishes him as a significant contributor to our community. He volunteers tirelessly, providing training sessions, attending matches, and offering girls only football coaching, fostering a love for the sport and nurturing talent among Rochford's youth through his involvement in Soccer Schools at Stambridge.

Shelley Blackburn is the winner of the Charitable Support category. Inspired by her mother's dementia diagnosis, Shelley founded "Music 4 the Brain," offering vital support to Rochford residents and beyond, fostering social connections and moments of joy for individuals living with dementia. Despite personal costs, Shelley's extraordinary dedication is evident as she funds and organises the initiative while caring for her mother, exemplifying selflessness and commitment to the community.

Lorraine Stalley is the winner of the Community Spirit category. Lorraine's selfless contributions greatly impact Hockley and Rochford, highlighting her unwavering commitment to helping others. She regularly provides essential items like food and toiletry hampers to those in need within Rochford, and extends her kindness to the wider community by volunteering and donating to the German Shepherd Rescue Centre in Horndon-on-the-Hill, ensuring the well-being of rescue dogs.

Joanna Twyman is the recipient of this year's Rochford District Citizen of the Year award. Joanna's unwavering commitment to running support groups for foster carers and adoptive parents in Rochford District significantly impacts the community, providing essential resources and inclusive spaces for families. Her dedication ensures cared for children across Southend and wider Essex thrive academically and transition successfully into adulthood, reflecting her enduring commitment to community betterment despite her busy schedule.
