Rayleigh Windmill reopens for half-term with new volunteer roles available

Date

The Rayleigh Windmill will reopen its doors to the public during the October half-term, offering a fantastic opportunity for families and visitors to explore this iconic local landmark.

The Rayleigh Windmill will reopen to the public on Wednesday 30 October, from 10am to 1pm. Visitors are invited to explore the rich heritage of Rayleigh, take in the stunning views from the top, and discover the history behind this hidden gem. Inside the Windmill, guests can enjoy a museum, an exhibition space and learn more about the fascinating history of Rayleigh Mount.

As we gear up for the 2025 season, we are looking for new volunteers to join our dedicated team. The Rayleigh Windmill, a Grade II listed building and a popular local attraction, relies on volunteers to provide a memorable experience for all visitors. Volunteers play a key role in offering guided tours, assisting with visitor services and ensuring the Windmill maintains its warm, welcoming atmosphere.

Councillor Michael Hoy, Chair of the Economic Development, Regeneration and Tourism Committee at Rochford District Council said: "The Rayleigh Windmill stands as a cherished landmark in our District, and we're excited to welcome visitors back during the half-term. It's a wonderful chance for families to explore our local heritage and enjoy the stunning views from the top. Volunteers are essential to the Windmill's success and that is why we would welcome more people to join to help share this wonderful piece of history with the community. With full training provided and the support of a friendly team, it's a fantastic opportunity for anyone passionate about preserving local heritage or looking to give back to the community."

Rayleigh Windmill’s Volunteer Co-ordinator, Trevor Rand, said: "Volunteering at Rayleigh Windmill has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It's a real pleasure to share the Windmill’s fascinating history with visitors and work alongside a team that’s so dedicated to preserving our local heritage. Whether it’s guiding tours or helping with the day-to-day operations, there’s always something new to discover. The training is excellent and the support from the team is fantastic. I highly encourage anyone with an interest in history, or simply looking to make a positive impact in the community, to join us - you won’t regret it!"
