Volunteers invited for winter tree planting sessions

Date

If you enjoy gardening and being outdoors and have a few days to spare in December – we have volunteering opportunities available at our winter tree planting sessions, where you will help create new woodland areas in select council open spaces to enhance local wildlife habitats.

Volunteers will be helping to plant Whip Trees which are young, unbranched, bare-root trees, named for their resemblance to horsewhips in thickness, length and flexibility. These younger trees adapt quickly to ground conditions and require less maintenance compared to standard-sized trees, making them ideal for creating thriving woodland areas.

As part of the Council’s Parks for Nature scheme, these tree planting sessions are establishing woodlands that will promote biodiversity and provide essential habitats for local species.

The tree planning sessions are taking place on the following days:

  • Monday 2 December – Wednesday 4 December 9am to 2pm at Mill View Meadows, Rochford
  • Thursday 5 December 9am to 2pm – Rawreth Recreation Ground, Rayleigh
  • Friday 6 December 9am to 2pm – Hullbridge Recreation Ground, Hullbridge

Councillor Chris Stanley, Chair of the Environment and Climate Change at Rochford District Council, said: “We are pleased to be able to invite residents to these tree planting sessions. By working together, we can make a real difference in improving our local environment, supporting wildlife and creating lasting green spaces to enhance the natural beauty of the Rochford District. If you’re interested in volunteering this winter, come and join us and help plant some trees.”
